Why this stage exists
Many projects start with enthusiasm and finish with disappointment. Requirements evolve. Priorities change. Communication becomes less frequent. New ideas emerge. Expectations drift apart. Eventually the project takes longer, costs more and delivers less than anyone originally intended.
The Develop stage is structured specifically to prevent that.
What happens during Develop
Projects are broken into clearly defined work packages, each with its own objective, scope, outcome, cost and timescale. Work is built and reviewed in short cycles rather than disappearing into a long silent stretch – build, review, adjust, continue.
Typical activities include:
Development in short, reviewable cycles
Fortnightly progress reviews with your team
Completed work demonstrated and discussed
Open questions resolved as they arise
Assumptions validated against reality
Priorities agreed for the next package
This allows progress to be measured, reviewed and controlled throughout, rather than assessed only at the end. Issues surface while they are still small, and work never drifts far from what was agreed.
It does depend on your side being available. Decisions need to be made promptly and feedback needs to be informed and practical. Where that happens, progress is fast and predictable.
Managing scope without stifling ideas
One of the biggest challenges in any project is scope creep. As stakeholders see progress, new ideas naturally emerge – usually a good sign, since it means people are engaged and starting to recognise new opportunities.
The challenge is that not every good idea belongs in the current work package. So new ideas are welcomed, discussed and documented, but not automatically added to work in progress. Some go into future phases, others justify a return to Define & Design. Nothing valuable gets lost, and neither does the budget.
